Assessment

Just a break down of how your children will be assessed this year. There are many different ways to assess student learning. Primary student work is tracked regularly through classwork, hands on activities, in-class performance and quizzes/tests. In our class, students are engaged in many hands on activities. While they are working, I am constantly observing and asking questions to assess their ideas and understanding.
How are they planning on solving the problem? What techniques/problem solving skills are they putting into practice?

Many great conversations and "Ah-ha" moments are had during this time. This method provides immediate feedback on what is working, how can we make it work and what may not be the best path to follow.
*Work sent home will not be evaluated toward their final mark, though, if it is a presentation they will likely be assessed on their oral presentation skills.

Terry Fox

Terry Fox’s dream was to run across Canada, to raise money for cancer research. His goal was to run over 8,000 km from the east coast of Canada to the west coast of Canada. He named his run, The Marathon of Hope and started it on April 12, 1980. He ran for 143 days and was then forced to stop because the cancer returned. Now every year, more than 8,000 schools across Canada hold a Terry Fox Run to help Terry’s dream for a world without cancer come true.
Today, we the staff and students of St. William, honoured the memory of Terry Fox.

Patterning and Sorting Review

On Thursday Sept. 27th, students will be having a Patterning and Sorting "show what you know" (test). Students are often being assessed through a variety of hands on and other activities in the classroom, however, a cumulative"show what you know" is a nice way to review all that is learned in a unit.
Check out our anchor charts as a study aid.

Patterning and Sorting

There is no time to waste...We have almost completed our first math unit! Sorting and Patterning. Please take a moment to go onto the math tab at the top of the posts and click on the first unit link. There the expectations for this unit are explained.

We did a lot of hands-on sorting, as a whole class, group, partner and individually.

We discussed ATTRIBUTES and pattern CORE. Go ahead and ask your child what those words mean!

We made patterns with 2 or more changing attributes.

We are now PATTERN PROs!
We will have a "show what you know" (test) soon. The students will write the date in their agendas.

Literacy and Social Studies

Dear Parents,

Our class is beginning a Language unit called Celebrate Traditions. In this unit, students find out about different celebrations enjoyed by many people across Canada, such as Canada Day, Aboriginal Solidarity Day, Remembrance Day, Kwanzaa, and Chinese New Year. Students will learn:
  • An understanding of titles and headings
  • The listening strategy of listening for predictive words
  • The reading strategy of predicting
  • The media strategy of interpreting messages from invitations
  • The writing strategy of staying on topic
  • Word work and vocabulary skills
During the next few weeks, I will be sending home activities about celebrations that you and your child can do together.

Here are some suggestions for how you can support your child's learning during this unit:
  • Talk about family celebration and traditions with your child. What celebrations or traditions do you celebrate as a family? How did these traditions begin?
  • Make a favorite family celebration food with your child.
  • Discuss how we can show respect for different cultures by learning about their traditions and celebrations.
  • Read simple books with titles and headings and discuss how the titles and headings help a reader predict what the story will be about.

Enjoy!

You Are Special

We began our religion class with a favourite book of mine. In You Are Special, Max Lucado tells the story of Punchinello, the wooden Wemmick who believes that he isn't good enough because of what others say about him. It explains how others can easily deflate your confidence through words and in this story, stickers (circle means disappointment and star means well liked).

You Are Special is a touching story that reminds us that we are precious to God just the way we are. God loves us even though we make mistakes and have flaws! That's how He made us. It is through spending daily time with Him that we begin to see ourselves through His eyes. Here is the video we enjoyed.

We have a student in our classroom with severe food allergies to all types of nuts. Due to the severity of these allergies, we are asking that you be mindful of this when packing your child's snacks and lunch. Thank you so much for your support and cooperation in this matter.
