Double Digit Subtraction

Here is a visual way we have been solving double digit subtraction:
Represent the top number with base ten blocks
5 rods and 2 units= 52
"More on the floor? Go next door and get some more"
Students learned to exchange a rod for its equivalent (10 units).
Now there are 4 rods and 12 units=this still equals 52.
Update what the top number looks like since adjusting the base ten blocks.
Subtract the bottom number from the top (Base Ten First).
39 was taken away.
3 rods and 9 units.
Count what is left!

Media Literacy

*identify the conventions and techniques used in some familiar media forms (e.g., cartoons use animation and sound to make fantasy characters seem real; cereal boxes use bright, strong colours, bold type, and inviting pictures)
*produce media texts for specific purposes and audiences, using a few simple media forms and appropriate conventions and techniques.

Students have been learning the tricks of commercials and ads. Here is a peak at a behind the scenes burger makeover.

More on Double Digit Addition

We are continuing to use and learn strategies to solve double digit addition. Students would benefit from extra review and practice of  Double Digit Addition.

An idea for Home Practice:

Reconciliation Retreat

The morning was filled with stories, singing, a craft and a prayer service in order to prepare students for their upcoming First Reconciliation. Miss Betty has been visiting weekly to share stories from the Bible and assist with any questions the students may have. On Thursday, March 7th, (during the school day) the Grade 2 students will have their Sacrament of Reconciliation at the school.
