Bug Man
As part of our science unit, Growth and Changes in Animals, our class will be taking part in a presentation by the Bug Man! The students will be learning about insects from around the world. Students will:
- get a chance to see mounted specimens of many of the largest and strangest insects and related organisms found world wide
- learn some of the unique survival mechanism used by insects
- discover why insect size varies across the different regions of the world
- marvel at their exquisite colour and specialized adaptations
- have a chance to examine up close and perhaps handle some live insects, arachnids and other rainforest creatures.
The presentation will take place in the afternoon of Monday March 4, 2019. The cost for this presentation is $3.00 per student. Please send in the money by Monday March 4th.

Animal Project
A Research Project
*This assignment is going to be
assembled in class. A file folder will
be provided to display the information.
*Complete information (rough draft) to be
brought in by Tuesday March 19th.
TASK: Choose one
amazing animal to research for science.
RESOURCES: You may use the Internet or books
for gathering information.
INCLUDE: a) Classification (is it a mammal, bird, reptile...?)
b) Appearance
(what does it look like?)
c) Habitat
(where does it live /structure of home, type of
habitat; cold, warm, land, water?)
D) Protection (how does it protect itself; camouflage? venom?)
e)
Diet (what does it eat?)
f) Interesting Facts (is this animal endangered? How does it adapt to its
environment? does it migrate?)
g) 2-3 Pictures (photographs,
computer images, hand-drawn)
REMEMBER TO:
- include
in rough draft two points per topic/heading (in sentence form)
Students will print the good copy in class

Double Digit Subtraction
Here is a visual way we have been solving double digit subtraction:
![]() |
| Represent the top number with base ten blocks 5 rods and 2 units= 52 |
![]() |
| "More on the floor? Go next door and get some more" Students learned to exchange a rod for its equivalent (10 units). Now there are 4 rods and 12 units=this still equals 52. |
![]() |
| Update what the top number looks like since adjusting the base ten blocks. |
![]() |
| Subtract the bottom number from the top (Base Ten First). |
![]() |
| 39 was taken away. 3 rods and 9 units. |
![]() |
| Count what is left! |
Media Literacy
*identify the conventions and techniques
used in some familiar media forms
(e.g., cartoons use animation and sound to
make fantasy characters seem real; cereal
boxes use bright, strong colours, bold type,
and inviting pictures)
*produce media texts for specific purposes and audiences, using a few simple media forms and appropriate conventions and techniques.
Students have been learning the tricks of commercials and ads. Here is a peak at a behind the scenes burger makeover.

More on Double Digit Addition
We are continuing to use and learn strategies to solve double digit addition. Students would benefit from extra review and practice of Double Digit Addition.
An idea for Home Practice:
![]() |
| Give value to face cards (e.g. 1). Make a double digit number out of 2 cards then choose another 2 cards and make another double digit number. Have your child find the sum. 74+ 13. OR Roll 2 die to make a double digit number (e.g. 42), then roll both again to create another double digit number, then the child finds the sum. |
